Neuroscience of Communication

Gabija Toleikyte

Has it ever happened to you that you got offended by something another person said?
Perhaps you feel without any bad intentions you offended the other person too? What happened next?
Both people feeling misunderstood, perhaps angry or sad.
Most problems in romantic and working relationships happen because of misunderstandings in communication.
And that is normal - each of us has a very different brain and we see the world differently. Moreover, our brain has a threat response system which is constantly searching for dangers and triggers fight, flight or freeze response once it perceives the danger. In that state each of us becomes emotional, irrational and selfish, thus, good communication is not possible.

If you want to learn to avoid these problems and develop successful communication habits, you might want to join this talk and learn from the neuroscientist (PhD) and life coach Gabija Toleikytewhat solutions brain science suggests to that.

Doors will Open at 7pm, The talk will begin promptly at 7.30pm.

The science of psychedelics and exceptional human experience

The traditional use of psychoactive plants and fungi for spiritual and shamanic rituals has occurred for thousands of years, whereas the Western scientific research of these substances has only been explored in the last 100 years, and prohibition stalled the last 50 years of this.

Now that scientific research is resuming, what do psychedelics tell us about the weirder side of human consciousness, and what can be learned from the traditional shamanic practices with these substances?

Dr David Luke is Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Greenwich where he teaches an undergraduate course on the Psychology of Exceptional Human Experience.

His research focuses on trans-personal experiences, anomalous phenomena and altered states of consciousness, especially via psychedelics, having published more than 100 academic papers in this area, including five books, most recently Neurotransmissions: Essays on Psychedelics (2015) and Talking with the Spirits: Ethnographies from Between the Worlds (2014).

He has studied techniques of consciousness alteration from South America to India, from the perspective of scientists, shamans and Shivaites, but increasingly has more questions than answers.

Doors open at 7pm and lecture begins at 7.30pm sharp!

Funzing - Neuroscience of Powerful Habits
Thursday 4th May 2017

As part of the LDN Talks @ Night : New Years Inspiration, LDN Talks @ Night and Funzing are proud to present Dr. Gabija Toleikyte on the Neuroscience of Powerful Habits.

Have you ever come up with amazing New Year's resolutions such as losing extra weight, starting saving up money, starting your own business, exercising regularly, changing your career, eating much healthier or quitting smoking?

You pumped yourself up with great enthusiasm and thought things are going to be very different this year. Fast forward - what happened a month down the line? If you are like the majority of us, you've probably gone back to where you started. And that's OK. Our brains resist a sudden change for multiple reasons. Humans are the creatures of habits. We form habits subconsciously without even realising it and yet we often struggle to change them.

If you are fed up of this yo-yo effect and want to gradually create a lasting change, then you might want to consider learning how to work according to your brain rather than against it.

In this talk, Doctor of Neuroscience and Performance Coach, Gabija Toleikyte will explain why your brain resists change and will share with you brain activity based strategies on creating a lasting change.

Mental health in the digital age

Virtual reality (VR), AVATARs, and apps. Technology is changing the way we assess and treat mental health problems.
Come and hear more about how these technologies are being developed and used with patients.
Plus interactive demonstrations and the chance to try VR out for yourself!
Please note: this event has no step free access.

Using virtual reality for mental health problems

Dr Lucia Valmaggia (Clinical Psychologist Senior Lecturer)
Virtual Reality (VR) enables the assessment of thoughts, emotions, body response and behaviour in real-time and has been used in psychology research for the last twenty years.
Recent developments in VR in the computer game industry has lead to the creation of simpler, more affordable immersive VR systems.
This has spurred on the use of VR for the research, assessment and treatment of mental health problems.
In my talk, I will give an overview of the use of VR in mental health with examples from our current research.

Designing the future of talking therapy

Dr Amy Hardy (Research Clinical Psychologist)
Fears about others causing us harm (or paranoia) are often experienced by 1 in 5 of the population.
Talking therapy can help, but is rarely available, and people may not be willing to give it a go and can struggle to apply new ways of coping to daily life.
Now SlowMo, a novel digital therapy, developed using inclusive design, aims to address these challenges. SlowMo supports people to visualise their thoughts and thinking habits to find ways of feeling safer.
Come and hear how our collaboration of researchers, clinicians, designers and technologists is helping to shape the future of therapy.

Food for thought

Mouse or man (and woman), we all need food to survive. But what happens when our relationship with food causes problems? Come and find out about treatments being used to help those with eating disorders, as well as the latest research on obesity. Please note: this event has no step free access.

Current Affairs in Eating Disorders

Professor Ulrike Schmidt (Professor of Eating Disorders)

Treating people with eating disorders can be difficult, especially if the person has been ill for some time. Novel and effective interventions are urgently needed for those with severe and enduring eating disorders. Evidence suggests brain networks involved in self-regulation and reward are important in pathological eating behaviours in eating disorders, but can targeting these networks alleviate distress and improve symptoms? Join us at the pub and find out if non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) could help people with anorexia or bulimia nervosa.

What can animals tell us about obesity?

Professor Lucilla Poston (Tommys Campaign Professor of Maternal & Fetal Health)

Understanding the developmental origins of health and disease is integral to human existence. For example, the nutritional environment in the womb can impact on the later development and health of the fetus. Using animal models our group was the first to demonstrate that offspring of obese mothers are at increased risk of obesity, hypertension and insulin resistance in early life. This talk will outline the origins of obesity, the impact of early environmental insults and the many ways in which animal models can pave the way to further understanding of human conditions.
